Liver cancer can be a primary liver cancer (hepatoma) which develops from the liver cells, there being an increased risk of developing hepatoma with cirrhosis ( scarring of the liver) or can spread from other cancers (secondary or metastatic liver cancer). Liver cancer may not cause any symptoms or can cause jaundice (the whites of your eyes or your skin turn yellow, itchy skin, dark urine and pale stools), weight loss, swelling of the abdomen or abdominal pain. The investigations and treatment of liver cancer will depend on where the cancer is in the liver, the size and number of cancers present, if there is background cirrhosis, if the cancer has spread outside the liver and a person’s general health.
